The inevitable will happen after this season. A-Rod will undoubtedly opt out of his contract with the Yankees to escape the wrath of the fans and the media. Today, on WEEI's Dale and Holley Show, they debated whether A-Rod would sign with Boston, and if Boston would make room for him. The answer to both questions is a most certain, "Yes!"
I know, I know. We have the 2007 season about to debut. And the Sox have a strong chance of winning the World Series this year. Still, it is intriguing to forecast the possibilities. The contracts of Curt Schilling, Mike Lowell, Matt Clement, Julian Tavarez and Mike Timlin expire, and chances are only one of those players - Schilling - will be resigned. The Sox have depth in the minor leagues with starting pitching and relief pitching, so they can use that surplus of cash to sign a position player. I don't like A-Rod in a Yankees uniform, but I can't imagine any Sox fan who would not like to see A-Rod playing shortstop for the Sox in 2008. Shortstop, after all, is his best position. It's something to think about.
Here's something else to consider - Mark Teixeira in Boston for 2009. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/mlb_spring_training/post/Will-Teixeira-bolt-after-08-?urn=mlb,25278 It's never too soon to speculate in Red Sox Nation. Of course, I'm more focused on this season - one that I think will be special for Red Sox players and fans alike.
